Little Luigi…

The family had no idea that little Luigi would grow up to be… over 7 foot tall. But, there is that saying that goes something like humble beginnings and greatness. I don’t rightly remember, some dilly-dally said it once and with his fancy pants and his fancy mustache, I really didn’t pay that much ‘tention to him. ‘Sides, hes’n was just selling some snake oil bout how “if elected, I will reform America”. How you gonna go and reform land anyhow? Not like you can just pick up a plot and move it. City folk was always tryin’ to sell us and what this coot was pushin twain’t  first, nor the last, time any of us folk heard a tall tale spun like yarn from Rapunzel’s hair.

Anyway, I always fount it silly to call him Little Luigi. Guess’n just goes to show, people’s lie bout all kinds of stuff.

The All Seeing Eye…

“I see absolutely everything.” The words formed in the young wizard’s mind from the eye carved out of the knot in the tree.

“I see what you did there.” The young wizard spoke out loud.

“What? What do you mean?” The thoughts came.

“You said ‘I see’. That’s very funny.”

“What? Are you mocking me? That isn’t very nice.”

“I’m not mocking you. You made a joke.”

“I did not.” The wizard guffawed. “What now?” Asked the tree.

“Eye. Knot. Come on, how are you..ehem.. knot.. getting this?”

“You’re being mean. You should leave.”

“Oh, you mean, I should be like a tree?” The wizard smirked.

“What?”

“And leave? No? Nothing? Seriously?”

“You are getting on my last…”

“Root?”

“That’s it.” The voice was angry. “Now you will pay.”

“You’re a giant eyeball carved into a tree. What are you going to do, stare me to death?”

The wizard was laughing so hard he never saw the limb that took him off his feet.

“No, I think I’ll just branch out and try something new.” The tree smirked.

Blaze of Glory…

Where did they go?” Carver asked as he dove behind the old brick wall. Several shots rang out and kicked up brick-dust in response.

“Had to ask?” Gabby said as she tucked even lower behind the wall. Carver just smiled and shrugged as he checked his Peacemaker’s and pulled back the hammers. “What are you doing?” Her voice notched up an octave.

“If I’m going to die, I’m doing it on my terms. And my terms are in a blaze of glory, darlin.”

“You’re gonna get yourself killed!”

“It’s kinda going to happen one way or the other.” He smirked as he took a deep breath, then spun around to face the wall, kissed his guns, and began to stand, stretching out the guns in front of him to fire.

The roar of gunfire echoed all around and a second later, Carver’s bullet riddled body slumped behind the wall.

Nightshade…

The team employed the use of Nightshade to get the information they wanted from their captive. Her techniques were a bit unorthodox and she wasn’t the least bit hesitant to do the ‘necessary’ in order to extract what they needed. Everything was going so well, she was a marvel to watch and, well, she always smelled so nice.

That was, until she came face to face with her nemesis. Nothing they tried had worked, so they sent in Nightshade. For hours she plied her trade to his will, and for hours he resisted, until finally she collapsed, dead.

“What happened?” Asked the general.

“Apparently she had a bit too much of him.” Said the scientist as he slide the dossier across the table to him. There at the top, in bright green letters was his name, “Howard Everett Marcus Locke.”

Cat Versus Dog…

He thought he found the perfect hiding spot. Thought, for once, that he was going to beat the dog at their game of hide-n-seek. Thought for sure, he would never look behind the curtain. So, he nestled in, laying as quiet as he could behind the curtain and waited.

Ten seconds turned into twenty turned into a minute. Boredom set in at the two-minute mark. Three minutes in, he abandoned his spot to see what was taking the lumbering oaf so long. He hunched down and looked around the room, spotting the dog sleeping on the kitchen floor. ‘Figures’, he thought to himself.

He moved into the kitchen and head-butted the dog. “Hey, we are supposed to be playing.” He said.

The dog opened his eyes, stuck his paw out and touched the cat. “I win.”

“What?! That’s cheating!”

“I win.” repeated the dog and closed his eyes again.

Of Petroglyphs and Meanings…

The petroglyphs told the story of an unusual event. And as Dr. Archibald Diggery studied them, he began to regale of their meanings in a most stupendous fashion.

“First, ‘Darkness. Then there was a great battle.” He flailed his arms around almost knocking off his pith hat. “Afterwards, there was a mighty feast, celebrating the conquering of the darkness.” He moved along the wall, reading. “A great fire erupted in the sky, killing many people. See how they run around here. Then finally, the fire died out and the great evil ‘Darkness’ returned.”

“What do you think Tomas?”

“Sir?”

“Of the petroglyphs.”

“Oh, well, I think someone just painted the different positions of the sun throughout the day.” He said, arms folded and very matter-of-factly. “I mean, that’s just what I see, sir.” He added as the professor glared at him from under his bushy white eyebrows.

Too Much?

The barista shook his head. That hedge couldn’t have moved closer overnight. Could it? And yet, today it was almost on the sidewalk. He shook his head again and closed his eyes as he looked out the large pained window. As he opened them up, even the ball the hedges played with seemed to be moving in his direction. “I think I need a vacation.” He said to no one in particular.

Curious, the customer at the counter asked. “What’s wrong?”

“I think I’m going crazy, but…” he paused looking at the hedges again, “those hedges moved over night.” The customer backed away a step and looked out the window.

Hesitantly, and trying not to offend the obviously crazy barista, the customer asked, “You sure you aren’t just watching too much Doctor Who?”

The Glass Marble…

At first, it looked like an ordinary marble, but it was far from it. Professor Iain McDuggle knelt down on his hands and knees and brushed more of the dirt away. Adjusting his spectacles, he leaned in and stretched his hand forward. As his fingers neared the glass orb it began to emit a soft blue light, causing him to pause as the glow spread across his face.

“Oh dear!” he exclaimed as a strange warmth permeated through his body and the blue glow encapsulated him. He scrambled backward, knocking his pith helmet off his head. The blue glow followed as the orb rose from the ground and hovered at his eye level and moved toward him. A mixture of fear and curiosity filled him until the warmth turned into a searing pain that began to bubble his skin.

Just as he began to open his mouth to scream, the blue light flexed around him, and in a puff of smoke, he disappeared.

The clear globe fell back to the earth and as it hit the soft earth, it let out a small burp.

Word Choices…

2015-06-08-bw-beacham“Zeus was not having a good day and he made sure everyone knew it. Bolt after bolt fell to the ground, tearing apart the night sky as the god of Thunder engorged his fury on the lands below.”

Engorged? Really? That’s the word you want to use?

Well, yeah. What’s wrong with that? It fits. He’s engorging his fury on the lands. Just like I wrote.

I can read what you wrote, but seriously. Engorging. You’re not afraid of people sniggering at that?

Well… I am now. And sniggering? Seriously? Why can’t you just say ‘laugh at’?

You said ‘engorging’, I’m pretty sure you lost the right to judge anything I say.

Fine. How about I just delete this whole story then.

Don’t do it on my account, I mean, I would hate to be the cause of your ‘engorged fury’.

Why do I put up with you?

Kind of hard to exist without a subconscious, isn’t it?

/sigh
