Buy Me the Moon…

“Yes, I’d like the moon balloon, please.” The man said as he looked at the colorful conglomeration of helium filled mylar.

“Oh, the moon? Yes, I…” The woman paused as she looked through the entire sorted stack, then spotting it at the very top, frowned a little and sighed. “You sure you want the moon?”

“Well, nothing is too good for my little girl, and when she asks her daddy to buy her the moon, you better believe that her daddy is going to buy her the moon.”

“Well,” said the attendant, “I can’t argue with that.” And begrudgingly started untying the mass of balloons one strand at a time.

Anbar and Caleb…

Anbar looked down from the battlement, the field in front of him was littered with the campfires of the Garvorian army. He stopped counting at 15, mostly because he couldn’t count any higher and he wasn’t even sure if he got to 15 properly. Caleb, the night watchman, walked over to him and put his hand on Anbar’s shoulder, causing him to almost soil his britches.

“You ok, Anbar?” Caleb asked as he looked at the blacksmith’s son.

“Other than almost crapping my pants, I’m great.” is what Anbar thought, but he only said, “Other than almost crapping my pants.”

Caleb looked at him sideways with a screwed face. “Ok.” He finally responded, shaking the comment off, then looking out at the campfires on the field. “Tomorrow shall be a good day, aye?”

It was Anbar’s turn to look at Caleb with a screwed face. “Why’s that?”

“Battle! Glory! Death!”

“Mine or theirs?

Sven and Vlad…

Sven stared hard at Vlad, his rocky exterior rigid. Vlad grinned a gritty grimace in return. The sun was setting, and today, the thousand year competition would come to an end. One of them would emerge victorious and one would forever be the loser.

As the light lowered toward the lithosphere, their shadows stretched, increasing inch by inch. The first one to reach the fence line would finally be free from the wizard’s curse. Sven strained against his stoney surface while Vlad vehemently vied for an advantage. Second by second staggered slowly by.

Until…

The sun set, diffusing their shadows into night.

Sven sighed. Vlad vexed.

The together they thought “Tomorrow!”

And that is the tale of the Two Stones.

Or so the story goes.

I Thought It’d Be Bigger…

“I thought it would be bigger. That’s all.” He looked at her, his pride deflating quickly. He could see the disappointment in her eyes and, well, being a man, he just couldn’t have her thinking that.

So, he bolstered his pride, looked her square in the eyes and said, “Well, it doesn’t have to be big in order to do its job, does it?”

She looked away from him, letting out a deep breath. “No. I suppose not. But, after everything you said about it, I just imagined it being… bigger.” She paused as she looked at it again. “I guess it will do, but, I feel a bit mislead.”

“Come on, just give it a try. Maybe after you try it, you’ll see, bigger doesn’t always mean better.” He smiled a toothy smile at her.

“Fine. But, it better be as good as you say. I don’t know if I can handle anymore let downs.”

He reached down, took her hand in his, and then stepped from the bridge’s bungy platform.

Seriously…

They sat on the bed of the truck, looking out at the island when Diane turned to Tom and said, “Have you ever wondered how they did it?”

“Did what?”

“Got all the stuff out there to build that house.”

Tom just turned toward her and stared hard, his mouth slightly open in disbelief. “Seriously?”

“Yeah, I mean, it’s been there for over a hundred years, right? It’s not like they could use a helicopter or a crane.”

“I just… I just can’t even.” He mimicked the popular phrase.

“Why do you do that?”

“Do you realize how absolutely ridiculous you sound?” Her face turned down and she started to pout. Feeling bad for making her feel stupid, he finally just told her. “They walked it out there.”

“You mean, on the water?” His stunned silence gave her a moment to ponder the thought. “I guess that could happen. But I didn’t think it was two-thousand years old.

“I’m sorry… what???”

“Well, Jesus built it, of course. After all, he was a carpenter, right?”

Ugly Ducklings…

It starts…

As a sizable

Block of ice

Stripped down in size

Shaved

Scraped

Sculpted

Slowly revealing

What lies beneath

Hardship gives way

To wings

Ready

For flight

To be free from

It’s frigid entombment

Released

Finally

Appearances…

As they walked the long line of grapes, his father told him he would one day run the whole business. Antonio smiled outwardly, but inwardly, he cried out. He didn’t want to be a business man. He wanted to use his camera and capture the world. But years ago, his father called his dreams “an aloof dream of a teenage boy”, and so, he hid his dreams. After all, he could be the dutiful son, keeping up appearances.

“It would all be temporary anyway,” he convinced himself, “After all, the old man can’t live forever.” Thoughts he kept to himself as he forced another smile toward his father.

The Stone Cross…

It had been years since he had walked the grounds of the ancient cemetery. Dead leaves crunched under his feet as the iron wrought gate squealed painfully in protest at his entrance. He approached a stone cross, tipped up and over, and knelt down in front of it.

“Sorry it’s taken me so long to come back, I had a bit of business to attend too.” He rested his hand on the cross.

“Filling graves with the lives of other’s for the one that was taken from you.” Her voice was ethereal.

“That’s not fair. But, I’m finally ready to be at peace.”

A ghostly woman stood before him. “You waged war against those who took your life. There is no peace in revenge. Not even when it’s over.”

Tears began to fall from his eyes as he collapsed to his knees. “I just want to come home.”

“It’s too late.”

First Impressions…

The lights played off the rotunda ceiling as it poured out of the aquarium tank. He stood, silhouetted against the deep blue, watching the fish swim in and around the reef, his arms akimbo.

“You’re late.” He said without even turning around.

“How did you…”

“You know who I am? Does it surprise you that I knew?” He turned, a smile crossing his face. “Nah, I saw you in the reflection of the glass.” He jested, closing the gap between us, his right hand outstretched toward me.

As I took his hand in mine, I could feel him clamp down, almost vise like, as his face became much more stern. “But, you are late.”

“Sorry, I got…”

“No.” His words silenced me instantly. ” No excuses. But, come walk with me.” As we turned to walk out of the rotunda, he said to me, “I have a job in need of doing.”

Boys of Summer…

He tapped the photo of the group of boys on the back of his hand as the emotions burned in his throat. A small tear welled up in the corner of his eye and with a deep sigh, he sat back on the couch.

“Want to talk about it?” She asked as she set her wine glass down.

“They were just going to the last day of school.” He choked out, trying to measure his voice. “I saw them walking down the beach on my final day there, so happy, so full of life.” Talking seemed to calm him just a bit. “I knew I had to get a photo. Something just,” he paused looking up, “felt right. Ya know?” Taking a deep breath, he began to speak again. “Ten minutes later, the terrorists blew up the school.”

She flipped through the other photos, all from the aftermath of the bombing. Placing them back down on the coffee table, she put her arm around him, trying to comfort him. “It’s going to make a great photo-essay.”
