One, Two, Tree…

“1…2… 5…” Emily pointed at each brightly colored car as they passed by.

“It’s three honey.”

“Free?”

“No… thA-ree.”

“Ta-ree. No mommy, that’s not a tree. That’s a car.”

“No Emily. Like this. Thhhhh-ree.”

Emily tried to imitate her mother, but only ended up spraying the backseat of the car with slobber. “Yucky mommy.”

“It’s ok Emily. Just keep trying.”

As Emily continued to count, Mom drove the car across the desert, each mile separating them from their past. As they passed another mile marker, Mom thought to herself, “nine hundred and twenty-TREE” and smiled a bit more.
